Every once in a while, a friend or colleague will recommend a show and you’ll realize that it’s on a network that either isn’t part of your cable lineup, or — if you’re a cord cutter — on a network you don’t subscribe to.
Well, seeing great AMC shows just got a lot easier!
Plex has partnered with AMC to bring you Live TV channels with some of your favorite AMC shows, like The Walking Dead, Halt and Catch Fire and one that I’m talking about today:
Into the Badlands.
This show never got enough love and I’m not sure why. I mean, Nick Frost alone is a draw. And Nick Frost doing martial arts in outfits like this? How do you say no to that?
The story takes place centuries in the future where a sort of feudalist dystopia has taken over the world and only one super kick-ass man…
and one sort of weaksauce (but O.P.) young boy have the ability to topple the balance.
Here’s the thing about Into the Badlands: it’s gorgeous. Just jaw-droppingly beautiful. And it features great fight scenes and technical choreography. And the world is weird but cool. There’s a great deal of attention to the worldbuilding and it really works.
The acting? Meh. Not as much. But it’s one of those trades you know you’re making up front. The world just doesn’t have enough super-talented martial arts actors who can also carry a scene with their Thespian chops. Or at least, this show didn’t have enough of them. It’s no different from watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a film or show. You’re going to get a fun performance, but it’s not going to be at the apex of the craft. It’s like that.
Still: it’s fun.
Into the Badlands was cancelled after three seasons, but you can watch them all for free on Saturdays on the AMC Presents channel on Live TV.
